First volume of the saga in 10 volumes of Malazan book of the fallen, Gardens Of The Moon is a jewel of dark fantasy.
There is no Manichaeism or a hero with a big heart but a war-torn world, characters torn between human and divine political struggles.
Just huge.

Be careful, the author explains very little about the history, the why and the how but presents the facts rather abruptly (ex: what is a warren)
Answers will come with time

For information I have taken everything from the beginning (I only read the first 5 volumes) when learning that the last was due out early 2011
