In the 3rd installment of the Clifton Chronicles, Archer picks up with the great drama that left the reader on the verge of their seat at the end of Book two. Recurring with his heavy list of characters, Archer familiarizes the reader with a growing adult generation, ample with their stagy issues that help shape England in the post-War era. The reader also meets a new 3rd generation, meagre honeys so far, who have their own capers and misfortunes as they mature from kids into their teenage years. Archer cannot assist but enhance the story with new plans and devious desperados, grappling the reader until the final lines of the book. Nothing is safe from Archer’s wild thoughts! Plots that appear to be tied off in the diminishing chapters are turned out to be amazing cliff-hangers. The reader recently summoned up screams for Book three are now supplanted with equal vigorous pleas for Book four. How can any publisher knowingly let the reader dangle, hovered mid-air, anticipating some sort of conclusion?
Like the prior books Jeffrey captures his audience with a page turner that’s as fascinating as it is rousing. Woven into the story is deceit, rancorous and lasting hatred, vengeance and the love of a family through all the anarchy.
While Archer has got to griped with the art of writing for close to forty years, his life experiences and thoughts never fail to astonish me. The man who, once thrown in jail, twisted the apparently bad experience into a magnificent 3-book series has done it again, using some of his life endeavors and instilling them into his characters. Engage in the Follett- and Rutherfurd-esque genre of multi-generational tales, Archer postulates that he can do the equivalent or better, leading the reader to the ecstasy and letting them hang, like the coyote who seeks out the roadrunner. Excellent work that is definite to attract a new generation of readers into his snare and rekindle the old faithful for another round of fantastic writing. No Archer aficionado can afford to miss this book or this series, which are perhaps some of his finest work so far. Excellent work Mr. Archer in this and the other 2 Clifton Chronicles. How well you tell your stories and keep me intrigued from start to end.
